The 24 Hour Museum/Museum and Galleries Month 2005 Arts Writing Prize

Who Can Apply?

Applications, in the form of 250-500 word news stories, reviews or features, are welcome from any full-time or part-time student of journalism in the UK; anyone who has recently finished a journalism course in the UK; or any current volunteer writers with the 24 Hour Museum.

Rules

The prize of an English Heritage Tour Through Time and £500.00 will be awarded to the best feature, review or news story about a Museums and Galleries Month event or exhibition published on the 24 Hour Museum website during the month of May, 2005.

It is vital to note that the piece must cover a bona fide MGM event or exhibition. Details of when and where these are taking place nationally can be found by searching on the MGM 2005 website at: www.may2005.org.uk

Entries can be submitted throughout the month of May, up until Tuesday May 31. Multiple entries are encouraged. If you would like to submit stories before May, please do contact us.

All writers thinking of entering copy for the prize must contact the Editor, Jon Pratty, before visiting the venue to be reviewed or writing the story. Unsolicited stories will not be accepted – this is important. It will prevent duplication of material by different writers, and also prevent writers from covering stories in galleries or museums not covered by 24 Hour Museum’s funding remit. The 24 Hour Museum covers publicly funded museums, galleries and heritage sites; non-profitmaking venues; venues run by Charitable Trusts; and independent museums and galleries. If in doubt about a museum or gallery, ask the Editor.

The judging panel will include Maev Kennedy, Arts and Heritage Correspondent, The Guardian and Jon Pratty, Editor, The 24 Hour Museum.

The 24 Hour Museum will assume the right to publish the story or stories of the author on the website, for the purposes of the competition, but the copyright of the content shall remain with the author.

The prize of £500.00 in the form of a cheque will be presented at a reception or meeting place yet to be decided. Travel expenses incurred by the winner coming to the presentation will be paid by the 24 Hour Museum, but not accommodation costs (if applicable).

The prize is administered by the 24 Hour Museum, an independent charity funded by the DCMS through MLA, the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council. Our aim is to promote UK museums galleries and heritage attractions and develop new audiences. The site was launched in 1999 as a partnership project between the MDA and the Campaign for Museums.
