THE PARK: EDUARDO PADILHA AT 198 GALLERY, BRIXTON
By Sabira Moledina 15/05/2002

Brazilian artist Eduardo Padilha, now showing at 198 Gallery in South London until June 8, is a collector of fragments extracted from people's lives.

As well as producing peculiarly exquisite drawings, Padilha has an underlying passion for Super-8 film footage of anything associated with interesting guises of movement.

Having travelled around the world, Padilha is now lives in Brixton, South London where he has just completed a four month residency in Brockwell Park.

He filmed miscellaneous activities such as people flying kites and walking their dogs.

The footage was shot on Super-8 film and has been slowed down to capture the surreal quality of ordinary movement.

The Brazilian depicted the skyline during a kite flying session, displaying a burst of clouds, each shaded with a spectrum of colours during a sunset. He was also successful in animating the character of a pit bull terrier whilst it was chasing a ball, displaying its fierceness and determination to catch the object.

"Padilha likes playing with the concept of narrative. He is infatuated with ideas of space and the park provides a perfect backdrop for a natural landscape in an urban environment", said Asako Yokoya, exhibitions organiser for 198 Gallery.

The vivacious use of lines and bold colour convey different aspects of Padilha's life combined with silent hues of undercurrents and expresses notions of identity, displacement and missing links in a memory.
