A new interactive exhibition called the The Goldfinger Project opens at [ s p a c e ] on September 1 and runs until September 30 2007 exploring the history of brutalist architecture through the work and legacy of a leading figure in British architectural history, Erno Goldfinger.

Contemporary scholar and artist Arni Harladsson has compiled key moments from Goldfinger’s lifetime and documented his legacy to architecture through a thorough study of the urban landscape.

Utilising photography, film footage, historical documentation, popular cultural memorabilia, sound and resourced information, the display includes material from such diverse sources as BBC news reels of the Ronan Point tower collapse, the Barbican, Trellick Tower t-shirts, popular music songs, advertising campaigns, interviews with residents and James Bond movies.

The exhibition is Vancouver-based Arni Harladsson’s most recent investigation into the architecture produced during the High Modernist era of architectural history – often referred to as brutalist architecture.

His travels have taken him across the globe to numerous exciting locations from Rix Reinecke’s landmark Ocean Towers in Vancouver, Libera’s isolated Villa Malaparte on Capri to Le Corbusier’s Modernist city vision of Chandigarh in India.

The ongoing mission has seen him take a series of photographs and collect a wide range of related material exploring architecture as a record of social and cultural change.

Ageing examples of High Modernist architecture are thus examined with the intention of probing historical changes in architecture, urban planning, and societal values. His work will also be exhibited in EAST International 2007.

During the course of the exhibition, a symposium will be held with guest speakers from the architectural world addressing the theme of the nature of photography and representation in relation to architecture.
