QUAY BROTHERS CELEBRATE 400 YEARS OF OPERA IN LEEDS

A newly commissioned contemporary artwork has been installed at Leeds City Art Gallery to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the staging of the first opera.

Monteverdi’s Orfeo was first staged in 1607 telling the classical story of love and loss where Orpheus enters the underworld to bring his deceased young bride Eurydice back to the world of the living.

Now internationally renowned film and animation makers the Quay Brothers have responded by retelling the story with a combination of film, dance, music and visual art, contained in a staged installation.

The installation, entitled She So Beloved, will be at the gallery until January 20 2008 before touring to other venues across the UK.

It is part of a programme of activities organised by Opera North to mark the anniversary of Monteverdi’s Orfeo.
