Exhibition Preview: Means of Escape at Touchstones Rochdale, December 21 2007 – February 17 2008

Means of Escape is the title chosen for an exhibition of artwork by prisoners at HMP Buckley Hall, Rochdale. Running at Touchstones Rochdale, the show concentrates on the art as created by individuals, not just ‘prisoners’, and aims to transcend the clichés so often associated with ‘prison art’.

Tutors involved in the exhibition have helped their students with a cognitive approach to making art, as well as channelling intuitive skills. The creative process has encouraged them to lose themselves in their work and engage in something beyond their immediate environment, hence the title of the show.

The students have also exhibited in London, having won prizes and sold work helping them to stretch their horizons and break down preconceived ideas about prison art.

This is an exhibition preview - have you been to see this show? Why not let us know what you think?
