WITH NAILS SELF HELP IN ROKEBY PERFORMANCE AND PARODY

Exhibition Review - Rokeby Gallery, London presents the multi-disciplinary activities of the pseudo-anonymous collective WITH until October 3 2008.

Theatrically adopting the persona of a wellness organisation, WITH is a company - complete with logo, brand strategy and website - offering Life Enhancement Solutions to clients who suffer from 'dissatisfaction in contemporary life'.

Gallery directors Ed and Beth Greenacre approached the group to commission their own WITH solutions and the results will unfold during the exhibition’s run, alongside case studies from the company archive.

Beth Greenacre commissioned the solution KNOWTHING™ and until the exhibition closes in October, an agent from WITH will be doing nothing on her behalf. Displayed is an email detailing Beth’s part in the work: 'On the hour, every hour, for the duration of the exhibition (official gallery hours only) you will be sent a photograph by email of your agent doing nothing.'

Beth's performative participation plays out in the gallery daily and directly impacts the exhibition content: 'As soon as you receive each email you must print each one on a heavyweight card and display each image in order, on a suitable shelving system.'

This interaction between WITH and the gallery creates a state of flux which sees the gallery directors act as curators, clients and even visual merchandisers. That is until the final day of the exhibition when 'the shelving system will be full of images that proves the agent has done nothing for the show’s entire duration'. This eventual accumulation of evidence will essentially showcase the end of an elaborate collaborative performance art piece.

Similarly, Ed Greenacre indulges the collective with his commission of HOMESPACE™ and an agent from WITH will be exercising on Ed’s behalf. This 'biographical clone' executes the group's unique brand of 'experiential offsetting' and everyday a DVD is delivered by courier to the gallery. The footage plus the accompanying t-shirt worn by the agent while exercising document the process.

Each piece of content in the exhibition is a prop in the ongoing production but driving the spoof humour of the work are WITH's agents, the face of the collective, who are depicted assisting ‘product assimilation’ in chroma-key green and, if necessary, with motion capture dots.

WITH's unique brand of experience design targets the field of contemporary art and the gallery environment. However, behind this assumed identity is an art collective making shrewd observations in the form of so-called Life Enhancement Solutions which are satirical responses to social and political change.

Their solutions, include TRAUMAFORMER™. This sees an agent live out a traumatic experience on your behalf. Meanwhile, VIOLENTOME™ uses an agent to create evidence of your participation in acts of violence. All of these solutions parody everything from amorality to guilty pleasures, economic downturn and armchair activism.

You can explore the work of WITH further at www.withyou.co.uk. WITH will also be in conversation with JJ Charlesworth and Jen Thatcher at Rokeby on the final day of the exhibition on October 3.

The Rokeby Gallery, 37 Store Street, London WC1E 7QF is open Tuesday to Friday 11 - 6 pm and on Saturdays 11 - 4 pm. www.rokebygallery.com 020 7168 9942
