Description
The Museum is in the Grade-1-listed, 17c house on Whitby's harbourside which belonged to Captain John Walker. In 1746 the young Cook came here as Walker's apprentice. When not at sea he lodged with the other apprentices in the attic - still preserved. The Museum houses a rich collection, artefacts from the Voyages, original letters of the period, some in Cook's own hand, paintings - Parry's Omai, Gainsborough, Hodges.

Every year the Museum stages a special exhibition. The exhibition for 2009 is: 'Cook and CANADA, a reputation in the making'. Exactly 250 years ago, James Cook was charting the deadly shoals and eddies of the St.Lawrence River, which enabled large ships to sail far up river. Under General Wolfe, British troops scaled the river cliffs at night and captured the French fortress of Quebec - the end of French political power in North America.

How important was Canada in Cook's career? With some of his earliest charts, on loan from the UK Hydrographic Office, we explore what Cook learnt, his charting of the tortuous coastlines of Newfoundland, and why he was chosen to lead the Endeavour expedition.

For details see the Museum's web site.
