Elephant Armour Is World Record Breaker!

Story by Anra Kennedy.

26/03/2004

A giant suit of elephant armour has made it into the Guinness Book of Records, as the largest suit of animal armour in the world.

The armour is on display at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds and is the only suit of its kind in the world. It's made of thousands of pieces of metal, all linked together.

The armour would have been used to protect an elephant in battle. It was made in India in the late 1500s, over 400 years ago.

The suit weighs 118kg and would have fitted an adult Indian elephant.

Entry to the Royal Armouries Museum is free, so if you're in Leeds check it out - you'll find the armour in the museum's Oriental Gallery.

If you have ever visited the Royal Armouries in Leeds you will know there are thousands of amazing weapons and pieces of armour in there. If you draw a picture from your visit we may be able to put it up onto the website.
