The long and varied history of York is being told through a brand new interactive website that captures the many layers that make up the city's rich heritage and displays them in an easy to understand way.

History of York was written by history experts in partnership with many of York’s most significant historical attractions.

Written by history experts in partnership with many of York’s most significant historical attractions and bodies, the new website includes an interactive map timeline that allows visitors to see how York has developed over the millennia.

At the same time it also offers the chance to learn about some of the key archaeological finds from the city

“York is such a deeply historical and complex city that it can be difficult to understand how all the different elements fit together,” said Michael Woodward, director of business development at York Museums Trust.

“History of York is all about giving people a chance to grasp the basics of the story - a story that covers the whole of English history but from a local perspective. It's also about enabling people to dig a little deeper into the areas that interest them.”

The site includes printable historical trails.

The website is made up of five main areas. The homepage uses a cartoon to give a brief guide to the city’s past. It also has a Pick of the Day section, which highlights some of the key attractions and objects.

From here you can navigate to the other areas – the Timeline, Themes, Trails and Join In, the latter allows web visitors to submit their own ideas for inclusion on the site.
