MGM 2008 - Newark Town Hall Museum Welcomes Visitors

By Salma Conway

23/05/2008

Museums and Galleries Month 2008 provides the perfect opportunity to do something different with the kids in the East Midlands this half term, with Newark Town Hall Museum and Art Gallery hosting a day packed with activities to suit all ages on Friday May 30 2008.

Events will kick off at 11:30am when the Mayor of Newark will open the day as the museum’s special guest. Bring along the camera to snap a picture as children will have the opportunity to try on mini Mayors’ robes and sit in his Mayoral chair.

And don’t forget to listen out for the Town Crier’s bell – he’ll be there throughout the day to talk about his historic role. There will also be a chance to look at some beautiful Georgian Dolls or try out the ‘T is for Treasures’ trail, plus there’ll be an opportunity to take a hands-on approach to history with the ‘object handling’ table where you can learn about items from the past.

For those with an interest in architecture, there will be information about the 18th century architect John Carr of York, who designed the classically modelled Town Hall. And for art lovers, the museum’s Spotlight Gallery will also be holding a stall to let you know what they’ve got coming up in their temporary exhibitions programme.

No museum can function without the tireless efforts of passionate volunteers, so Newark Town Hall will be honouring its own volunteer guides with a display on the work they do.

Town Hall curator Patty Temple said she is looking forward to an action packed day. She added: “I think this MGM event will really show off the best of all the museum does and in particular promote the many hours freely given by our volunteer guides.”
