Description
After many years of hard work by dedicated volunteers, the magnificent Midland Railway Roundhouse at Barrow Hill that faced certain demolition (it was saved 2 days before it was due to be demolished and is now a listed building!) is now a very interesting railway centre. We hope you will find something to interest you during your visit to the site of Britain's last operational roundhouse. Our very first open weekend was held in July 1998. A regular events calendar has evolved giving great pleasure to visitors of all ages. We extend a very big thankyou to all those who have helped us during this very exciting and difficult project. The results are now there for all to see. We went on to win the Heritage Railway Association award in 1998 for an outstanding contribution to railway preservation.
Now home to the new Deltic Preservation Society Museum/Depot!
Collections description
We have over 60 diesel, steam and electric locomotives on the site, and more are brought in for the Steam and Diesel galas.

Our archive room is full of books, videos, magazines, photographs and much more, which have all been kindly donated to the Barrow Hill Engine Shed Society.

Key artists and exhibits
This centre is Britain's last remaining operational roundhouse, built originally to house steam locomotives. ; The famous Kolhapur engines is a permanent resident in the Roundhouse. ; BHESS are striving to rebuild this important historical, architectural and unique site back to its original glory. The platfom, running line and 'smoke hoods' have been reinstated, and funding has recently been secured and used to complete the construction of a new maintenance/running shed on the site!
