Description
The Gallery and Sallis Benney Theatre have been an integral part of the city's cultural life since the late sixties providing a strong mix of national and international exhibitions, world music and lectures. The Gallery hosts up to sixteen exhibitions a year covering all aspects of contemporary art from crafts, painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media and design. These have included artists and exhibitions of national importance such as Alan Davie, Mark Power - 'The Dome', 'Sleeves of Desire' ECM record cover sleeve art and the Haslemere Peasant Arts Collection 'The Lost Arts of Europe. The Gallery is open six days a week attracting an audience of over 50,000 a year. In addition, the annual student assessment shows are exhibited throughout the Grand Parade building, making it the largest gallery in the South East, and giving the public the opportunity to view some of the best up and coming artistic talent in the country. This is complemented by a programme of school visits and entertainment. The Gallery also originates touring exhibitions, associated arts publications and maintains the university art collection.
