Open
The museum is now closed for an extensive restoration and redevelopment programme. When it re-opens in 2007, visitors will be able to enjoy a range of exciting new displays and activities in a refurbished, accessible museum.
Description
This splendid Victorian railway station recreates a sense of rail travel in the past. Explore the ticket office as it would have looked in Victorian times, see the guard's van and goods wagon in the railway sidings and watch today's trains zoom past the Platform Gallery. The Children's Gallery has a range of toys, books and dressing up clothes. Special temporary exhibitions can be seen throughout the year and regular activity sessions are also held.

Collections description
The collections at Monkwearmouth all relate to transport. They include the contents of the 1866 booking office and rolling stock such as guard's and goods waggon, in the sidings. There is a collection of printed material, photographs and models relating to railways, particularly those in Tyne & Wear. Sunderland Corporation Transport is also represented, and there is a significant collection of bicycles.
