Description
Head of Steam - Darlington Railway Museum was first opened in 1975 and is housed within North Road Station, built in 1842 for the Stockton & Darlington Railway.
The Stockton & Darlington Railway was the first steam hauled public railway and was opened on September 27th 1825.
Collections description
The museum collection covers the railway of North-East England, with particular emphasis on the Darlington area. "Locomotion" (1825), hauled the inaugural train on the Stockton and Darlington Railway. Also on display are 'Derwent', 1463 and 901 (Q7). A range of smaller items including station and lineside signs, locomotive nameplates, lamps etc complements the larger exhibits.
The museums collection of documentary material can be viewed at the Ken Hoole Study Centre located within the museum.
