Please note that the museum's storage facility; the Community Heritage Access Centre at SSDC Lufton Depot, 7 Artillery Road, Lufton, Yeovil, Somerset, BA22 8RP is open by appointment, Monday to Friday, 9am - 5pm to the public and community groups. Description
The history of South Somerset can be experienced in the displays of the Heritage and Visitor Information Centre. From Prehistoric and Roman occupation, through to agricultural and industrial revolutions, the Heritage and Visitor Information Centre shows life and times through the ages in South Somerset.
The Heritage and Visitor Information Centre has two galleries. The Lower Gallery features a temporary exhibition space which houses an exhibition on English Bronze Cooking Vessels until the end of December 2008.
The Upper Gallery features a reconstructed Roman kitchen and original mosaics recreated from excavations of villas found nearby. There are also displays on local history, for example: gloving, Westlands, the Stiby gun collection and textiles. There is also an exhibition on Jack The Treacle Eater undertaken by school children from London and Barwick in Somerset. Jack used to run to London from Barwick, and of course he ate treacle.
The Heritage and Visitor Information Centre also houses the Tourist Information Centre.
