Description
Scarborough Art Gallery, an Italianate villa built in the 1840s as part of The Crescent, houses Scarborough's fine art collection. Paintings feature seascapes and views of Scarborough including works by Atkinson Grimshaw, H.B.Carter, Frank Mason and Ernest Dade. The Gallery also displays works by Lord Leighton, Ivon Hitchens, Matthew Smith, Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious.

The Gallery has a lively temporary exhibition programme that features contemporary work by professional artists. Our programme also includes talks and holiday activities for families.

Collections description
The collection at Scarborough Art Gallery is of great local significance and includes subjects in the town and area by local artists from throughout history. There are oils and watercolours of Scarborough, by artists of the nineteenth century such as John Wilson Carmichael and Henry Barlow Carter. Also on display are nationally important artists from the twentieth century such as Ivon Hitchens and Matthew Smith. These displays change throughout the year, though visitors will always see the magnificent Atkinson Grimshaws.
