Description
The only place in the world where rope haulage can be seen on a standard gauge railway system, Bowes Railway is a preserved colliery railway. On operating days, steam train rides are given to the hauler house for rope haulage demonstrations, but the fine examples of Victorian workshops and machinery can be seen during the week for free. Very often free guided tours are available, but please contact us in advance to be sure. Educationally, we con cover most aspects of the National Curriculum. Please contact Alison Gibson for a copy of our publication 'Keep on Track with the Bowes Railway', which puts us in context with the National Curriculum
Collections description
Mining and railway memorabilia, specifically for the Bowes Railway or previous names of Pontop and Jarrow Railway and John Bowes and Partners. We also have an underground locomotive display, and a limited collection of social history ephemera
