Description
The University of Leeds has a total of twenty-six Departmental museum collections including art, education, medical, scientific instruments and natural history. Several of these collections have their origins in the early years of the University (established 1904) and its predecessor, the Yorkshire College, as teaching and research collections.
The University Art Gallery shows a selection of works from the Art Collection and has a varied exhibition programme. The Museum of the History of Education was founded in 1951 and shows the history of education from the nineteenth to the twentieth century.
Collections description
Individual named collections in the University include: University Art Collections and Gallery, University of Leeds International Textile Archive, Museum of the History of Education, Godfrey Bingley Photographic Collection, Chinese Paintings, Musical Instruments, Classics, Near Eastern Archaeology and Modern Arabic Studies, Coin and Medal Collection, W.P.Thompson collection (teaching materials for Latin and Greek), Reginald Rigby Lantern Slide Collection, Ogden Collection (archaeology of Babylon and Ur of Chaldees), Denison Roebuck Stamp Collection, Biology Museum, Earth Sciences collection, Anatomy Museum, Pathology Museum, Dental Museum and Technology Collection, School of Materials Historic Scientific Instruments and Equipment, Chemistry , Physics, Mining and Mineral Engineering, Chemical Enginnering, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology,and Electronic and Electrical Engineering.
