Description
Our aim is to develop and promote excellence in the art and industry of glass. The National Glass Centre is an important and unique venture. Based in an innovative new building, set on the north bank of the River Wear, the National Glass Centre is dedicated to promoting glass in all its uses; in design and technology and as a vehicle for artistic expression. Glass is a material that is so commonplace, so omnipresent, that it is taken for granted by all of us. A beautiful and hugely versatile material that has been used by man since 5000BC for our everyday needs, advancement of technology and to create objects of beauty that enhance our lives. The National Glass Centre is also a place of work where artists, designers and makers gather to produce exciting new products and art. The University of Sunderland's Glass, Architectural Glass and Ceramics Departments are located at the National Glass Centre as is the international Institute for Research in Glass; this enables us to attract some of the world's greatest glassmakers as well as train and educate new artists to the highest calibre. Your visit is meant to be entertaining as well as informative and we hope this website gives you an insight into the history, art and technology of glass. The National Glass Centre is the living home of glass and we hope you visit us again and again.
