We would like to draw your attention to a few frequently asked questions by visitors to the Abbey which may help you to plan your visit:
Is there wheelchair access?
There is wheelchair access to the Ground Floor only but provided we are advised in advance, we can arrange for the first floor to be made accessible via a private lift. Unfortunately access is not available to the crypt and silver vaults. There are a small number of manual wheelchairs available for visitors use at no extra charge. We advise you to book in advance to avoid disappointment.
Are Pushchairs allowed in the House?
Pushchairs are not allowed in the House and where possible young children should be carried or kept under parental control. Pushchairs can however be left inside the first room at the entrance of the House.
Do you provide special picnic areas?
The picnic area is adjacent to the main car park or alternatively you can carry your picnic into the informal gardens and picnic on the grass whilst enjoying the tranquil surroundings. There are no special picnic tables provided and you are asked to clear all litter when you leave.
What is your policy on dogs?
Dogs are welcome in the Park but must be kept on a lead to protect the deer. Please ensure any mess is cleared up by the owners in consideration of children and other users of the Parkland. Dogs are not allowed within the Abbey Grounds under any circumstances (Except for guide dogs.)
Is photography allowed in the House?
Photography is not allowed in the House but we would be more than happy to see any interesting or unusual photos you may take of the exterior of the House or Parkland. If we decide to use any of these for advertising purposes we would be happy to pay for them.
Can we feed the deer?
Deer are shy animals and will probably run away from you if approached. Should you find a baby deer in the Park please do not touch it in any way, because if you do its mother will never return to it and it will die.
Additional Information
We ask all visitors to please observe the speed limit of 20 mph around the Park and take special care within the car park areas.

Description
The Abbey is built mainly of a local stone called Totternhoe Clunch, a rather soft and porous material, which causes many problems. There is a restoration programme of the main fabric of the house which spans five to ten years. The Parks Department is responsible for the maintenance of the 3000 acres within the walls. Each year they plant one hundred standard oak trees, plus any replacements for trees lost or damaged in gales.

Collections description
There are ten species of deer in the park, looked after all year round by the Head Verdurer. Amongst them are the Père David, which originated in China. In 1985, Lord Tavistock donated 22 deer to the Chinese Government, and they have adapted successfully to their new home, now boasting a population of 360 in their home just south of Peking.
