Description
Berkshire's dynamic contribution to aviation history is graphically re-captured at the museum. Run as a charitable trust, the museum is at the historic site of Woodley Airfield, near Reading, U.K. - once the centre of a thriving aircraft industry. The museum welcomes group visits and runs an active educational programme for schools, linked to National Curriculum requirements, demonstrating the development of aviation techniques. Collections description
Berkshire has indeed a long and distinguished association with aviation that well deserves recognition. Miles and Handley Page aircraft built at Woodley are being re-constructed and exhibited along with fascinating pictorial records and priceless archives. Vickers-Armstrong Supermarine built Spitfires in the heart of Reading and Newbury. Fairey and de Havilland were both associated with White Waltham and Handley Page took over from Miles at Woodley. At Langley airfield, more recently included in the county, Hawker built the famous Hurricane and other fighter aircraft. There were also lesser known manufacturers such as Chilton of Hungerford and Elliotts of Newbury. Major companies involved in the aviation industry, past and present include; British Aerospace, Ferranti, Sperrys, Racal, Adwest, C.F.Taylor and ML Aviation. The Museum provides the setting for commemoration and the facilities for the display of artifacts, photographs and information to serve researchers, historians and enthusiasts, not only in the field of aviation but also in local industrial, social and economic history.
