Prior to opening in 2006 the gallery we have an active pre-opening programme of events and exhibitions taking place throughout Middlesbrough and the Tees Valley. Our Education team are also running a number of outreach initiatives some of which are linked directly to our exhibition programme. Description
mima, Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art is a major new venue for high quality visual art opening in January 2007. This landmark venue will host an internationally important programme of exhibitions, presenting the very best of art and craft from 1900 to the present day. It will bring together the town’s art and craft collections for the first time. mima will include formal and open gallery spaces, an education suite, auditorium, cafe-bar, roof terrace and conservation studio. Work on site began in July 2004. Once the gallery opens to the public in 2006, it will be re-hung four times each year, presenting a different combination of temporary exhibitions and varied displays from our permanent collection. The gallery has been designed by leading international architecture practice, Erick van Egeraat Associated Architects. It will be situated in the town centre between the Carnegie Library and Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen’s sculpture, ‘Bottle of Notes’.

Collections description
The modern and contemporary art collection comprises of well over 1,000 paintings, drawings, prints, photographs and sculpture which include works by Ben Nicholson, David Bomberg, LS Lowry, Stanley Spencer, Gwen John, David Hockney and Bridget Riley as well as many young internationally acclaimed artists. In collaboration with the Contemporary Art Society, we are continuing to acquire more works as we move towards the opening of mima. mima have employed two conservators who have assessed the fine art collections and are working to ensure that all exhibits are in good condition, properly framed and ready for presentation.
The contemporary international jewellery collection consists of both precious and non-precious jewellery. Examples from the collection have been featured in many major publications on the subject and have toured widely.
The 20th century British ceramics collection is also one of the most important of its kind in the country, charting the studio ceramics movement from the 1920s to the present day.
