Outstanding collection of English and Continental Old Master paintings
Important collections of English and French 18th-century porcelain
Fascinating exhibition of Shell advertising posters from 1920s and 30s

Distant views, terraced flower borders, herbaceous borders, tranquil water gardens and the National Collection of asters.

For safety some areas of the gardens may be closed following prolonged heavy rain. Two of Upton's paintings by Hogarth will be on loan to the Louvre, then Tate Britain for most of 2007.
Collections description
The impressive mansion, built in the 17th century on an earlier site, was remodelled in the 1920s by the 2nd Viscount Bearsted, son of the founder of Shell Oil and later the company’s Chairman. One of the great collectors of his age, he filled the house with stunning collections of art, tapestries and porcelain, and laid out magnificent gardens in the valleys below. Amongst the outstanding collection of English and Old Master paintings presented over three floors are works by Hogarth, Raeburn, Stubbs, El Greco, Bosch, Metsu, Canaletto and Breugel, whilst the porcelain collection includes fine examples of Sèvres, Worcester tableware and figures by Bow, Chelsea and Derby.
