Description
The Hayward, a purpose-built, modern art gallery, was opened by Her Majesty The Queen in 1968. It is considered an icon of sixties ‘brutalist’ architecture. The Gallery plays a vital role in the visual arts in the UK and internationally. As one of the largest and most versatile temporary art exhibition spaces in Britain, it has proved remarkably adaptable in presenting a wide range of ground-breaking exhibitions over more than thirty years.

The programme provides a contemporary perspective on the art of our time and times past. It aims to bring an enquiring and critical edge to exhibitions which span history, cultures, artistic disciplines and media. The Hayward Gallery acts as a fulcrum in visual culture, a bridge between the experimental and the established. It provides a prominent platform for emerging art and artists, and new perspectives on internationally acclaimed artists. Challenging received opinions and crossing boundaries, the Hayward provokes critical debate and extends ideas about what art can be. With the freedom to present work from any era and in any medium, in depth and with authority, the Hayward offers the chance to experience and enjoy the constantly changing world of art.
