Description
What is The Lowry? The Lowry is a spectacular new building for the 21st century, it is unlike anything you will have seen before. One visit to The Lowry will demonstrate that this is something else. One look inside and you're hooked. You'll find not one theatre, but two. In the galleries, not only L S Lowry but contemporary art exhibitions as well. There are shops, restaurants and bars.
Collections description
The Lowry houses the biggest public collection of works by L S Lowry. In 2000 it was transferred from its original home at Salford Art Gallery that had begun collecting his work in the 1930s. The collection now numbers around 350 paintings and drawings, ranging across Lowry's artistic career. Different works from the collection are shown, alongside pictures loaned from other public and private collections, in changing, themed exhibitions. The Lowry is a place where art and people meet. You can see the best in the visual arts presented in lively and engaging ways. The familiar is juxtaposed with the unfamiliar alongside exhibitions exploring the Lowry collections, there is a programme of modern and contemporary art of diversity and appeal. There are up to 16 exhibitions per year, each generally lasts for 3 months, with occasional shorter projects and events.
