Description
One of the most important 18th century landscape parks in Europe. Created between 1738 and 1773 by the Hon. Charles Hamilton when he took barren heathland and transformed it into a sequence of subtle, surprising vistas inspired by his appreciation of the great Renaissance - The Hamilton Landscapes.
Stroll from scene to scene - from evergreen Amphitheatre to Gothic Temple, from magical Crystal Grotto to curious Turkish Tent, from wild wood to colourful flower beds, from the Temple of Bacchus to his own sculpted vineyard.
Here the buildings and waters, trees and shrubberies are more than a gardener's delight. They form a work of art, a jewel of English culture in all its quiet charm, here to uplift and inspire.

Collections description
Authentic 18th century plantings - The Painshill Heritage Plant Project is in its first stage - American Roots - which will culminate in an exhibition in the walled garden in July 2005. Working closeley with Historic Bartram Garden in Philidelphia, the Arnold Arboretum at Harvard University and Monticello in West Virginia, Painshill will establish a showcase for its collection of authentically sourced North American plants. Following the footsteps of John Bartram, Peter Collinson and Charles Hamilton, Painshill will show trees, shrubs and flowers with known provenace, some sourced from Bartram's original collecting sites on the eastern seaboard of North America.
