Description
Now you can travel on a train pulled by a steam locomotive from the historic station at Embsay, built in 1888, or Bolton Abbey Station. The culmination of a dream stretching back almost thirty years, the newly completed track extension and the opening of the award winning Bolton Abbey station offers a whole new experience for the visitor. The site of the Bolton Abbey station boasts to being home to a number of rare plants and flowers such as the Bee Orchid and lies adjacent to a newly created wetland area developed with greatly appreciated financial assistance from Yorventure. The station itself is a reconstruction of the original with its own gift shop, refreshment room, toilets and facilities for the disabled and has substantial parking facilities for cars and coaches. The general waiting room also boasts a very substantial collection of pressure lamps. Situated apporoximately a mile and a half away from the ruins of the 12th Century Priory, Bolton Abbey Station is the ideal starting point from which to visit the quaint village and surrounding countryside. Picnic on the banks of the river or in the shade of Strid Wood, adjacent to which you can find the Cavendish Pavillion for refreshments. During your trip, why not take the opportunity to stop off at Holywell Halt, a recreated country halt where you will find Hartington Hollow picnic area and a children's trail. Linger a while at Embsay Station, the headquarters of the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway, and enjoy its amenities, the café, the Railway's gift and book shop (an absolute must for the avid 'browser'!), see the extensive collection of or just watch the world go by from the adjoining picnic area. On summer Saturday evenings, you can enjoy an excursion in the award winning Victorian carriages run by Stately Trains. Strawberries and cream are served during the journey, with wine and cordials on arrival at Bolton Abbey Station.
