Description
Modern local history museum built over an historic Grade II listed dry-dock
|
|
Collections description
Approximately 20,000 objects. Over 50% relate to the shipbuilding, heavy engineering and armaments work of Barrow Shipyard. Other industries represented include iron-mining, iron and steel production and the Furness Railway. Also, extensive social history collections, as well as fine and decorative art, natural history and geology.

Key artists and exhibits
Key exhibits include over 10,000 glass plate negatives from Barrow Shipyard, available to search in the Museum on computer terminals in digital format, along with multimedia interactives e.g. take a virtual tour of Oriana or a Second World War submarine. Also displayed are a historic collection of Vickers ship models.
