Description
The Lakeland Arts Trust has embarked upon an ambitious project to redevelop the Windermere Steamboat Museum. The famous collection of boats has been described as 'the most important collection of boats generic to one location anywhere in the world'. Currently the site is closed to the public as a series of operations take place to first rescue, then research, conserve and restore the boats, then finally rebuild the museum complex. Open days and pre-booked tours are available for a peek 'behind the scenes'.
Collections description
The collection includes some very important boats. "Dolly" is the oldest mechanically powered boat in the world, and was salvaged after 67 years on the bottom of Ullswater. "Esperance", one of the oldest boats on the Lloyds Yacht Register and the inspiration for "Captain Flint's Houseboat" in Arthur Ransome's "Swallows and Amazons" can be boarded as part of the guided tour. "S. L. Swallow" and "M. L. Water Viper" take passengers on a 50 minute cruise around Belle Isle, with complimentary tea brewed in the famous Windermere Steam Kettle. We have an exhibition area devoted to "Swallows and Amazons", Beatrix Potter's rowing boat and several racing boats that have taken part in water speed trials on Lake Windermere.
