Description
The Manchester Museum’s origins lie in the collection of the Manchester manufacturer and collector John Leigh Philips (1761-1814). After his death, a small group of men bought his 'cabinet', and set up the Manchester Natural History Society in 1821. As its collections grew from around the world, the collections were transferred to their present location in the Owens College in 1868, (now the University of Manchester). The buildings which now house the Egyptology and Ethnographic collections were designed specially by Alfred Waterhouse and opened to the public in 1890.
