Description
Guildhall Art Gallery was established in 1885 to house & display the Corporation of London's collection of works of art. The original Gallery was destroyed in May 1941. The new Guildhall Art Gallery was opened in 1999. It is on the same site as the first next to the mediaeval Guildhall in the historic heart of the City of London. The building also houses the remains of Roman London's Amphitheatre, unearthed on the site in 1988.

|
Collections description
The collections are mainly comprised of British works of art. Included are fascinating views of London & London life from the 16th Century to the present day, & Victorian paintings & sculpture including well-known Pre-Raphaelite works. The Gallery also houses the extensive Studio Collection of 20th-century colourist Sir Matthew Smith. There is a programme of changing exhibitions. Items not on display may generally be viewed in store by appointment.
