Description
Besides the village war memorial stands a medieval building adjoining a half timbered priest's house. It was built in the 15th Century by the Carthusian monks of Sheen (who owned Kings Manor) and is now often called Champs Chapel after the family who owned it once.
During its long life it has been used as a chapel, washhouse, bakehouse, pigeon loft, meeting room and then for many years lay derelict. Despite its varied background (together with the priests house) it is one of the grade one listed buildings in the village and one of only a few in the whole of the Vale District. In 1901 the chapel was acquired by the Eyston family and has since been carefully restored to the building we can see today. It is the home of the village museum and from time to time houses a display about aspects of village life.
The chapel is built of rough ashlar (partially restored with Clipsam stone), with a tiled roof. It is internally divided by an oak screen with a central doorway. In the upper room is the village museum.
The Grade I listed building is rented by East Hendred Heritage Trust and is used as a village memorabilia museum. A museum visit can be combined with a village tour and information on East Hendred History.
