Description
Calling all culture vultures, heritage hunters, curious kids, cash-strapped carers, searching students, restless retirees and anybody with even a passing interest in who we are and what we do. We aim to provide something for everybody - and admission is free!
Our Edwardian building, which opened in 1910, houses collections of art, history and natural science. Visit us to experience our visiting exhibitions, permanent collections and regular special events. Our packed programme of includes talks, workshops, concerts and activities. We cater for schools and community groups through our popular Education and Outreach Service that provides services both inside and outside the Museum.
Collections description
Art, History and Nature collections. We're changing nature -our redisplayed Natural History Gallery opened in the summer of 2004 and has been a big hit! Designated Cottonian Collection: Paintings by Reynolds, Kaufmann, Ruysdael, Laroon etc; works on paper by Altdorfer, Watteau, Guercino etc; furniture, figurines, prints. Other art collections: St Ives, Camden Town and Newlyn paintings and British & Chinese ceramics. Natural history: minerals; mounted specimens; herbarium; geology etc. Human history: archaeology; ethnography; local history; photographic archive.
