Description
The Narrow Gauge Railway Museum was started in the 1950's and the first collections were displayed by 1956. A new building was opened as part of the Wharf Station of the Talyllyn Railway in 2006. This is on the site which has been the terminus of the Talyllyn Railway since it opened in 1865. The original building survives and some of the original slate yard has been restored and can be viewed from the museum balcony.
Collections description
Over seventy railways are represented from over 200 years of narrow gauge railway development in Britain and Ireland. Locomotives, wagons, signals and many items needed to operate railways are on show. The displays feature early plateway and conventional track; a large collection of nameplates, works plates and number plates from locomotives long since scrapped and single line working devices. The slate railways of Wales feature strongly and there is also a good collection from the Isle of Man and Ireland as well as material from English railways.
