Description
The ceramic collection was started in the early twentieth century and revived in the 1970s. The gallery houses a seminal collection of studio pottery. A touchscreen in the gallery provides a comprehensive database on the 1600 items in the permanent collection. The Ceramic Archive supports the Collection with biographical files, collections of UK and foreign journals, audio tapes, sales catalogues, and records of the Craft Potters Association. A bulletin is published annually with details of acquistions, research projects and archive news. The collection is the basis for changing gallery exhibitions, touring exhibitions, education and outreach work.

Collections description
The studio pottery collection includes work by early makers such as Bernard Leach, Shoji Hamada, Michael Cardew, Katherine Pleydell Bouverie and Lucie Rie and many others. More contemporary makers across the world are also represented and include Gordon Baldwin, Phil Rogers, Alison Britton, Elizabeth Fritsch, Clare Curneen,Jeroen Bechtold and Ken Matsuzaki. Three themed touring exhibtions with a handling collection are available for education. These are 'Taking Tea', 'Animal Fantasies' and 'Sensational Ceramics', which is particularly aimed at the visually impaired.
