Description
The Anglo-Saxon royal burial site where the priceless Sutton Hoo treasure was discovered in a huge ship grave.
Burial ground of the Anglo Saxon Kings of East Anglia. Exhibition hall with video introduction, full size re-creation of the ship burial.
The exhibition tells the story of the site – which has been described as ‘page one of English history’ – and displays some original objects as well as replicas of the treasure.
Collections description
The 2004 exhibition explores the fascination that the Anglo-Saxons had with animals and how they were portrayed on some of the stunning artefacts from this period. The centrepice of the display is the wonderful purselid found in the 1939 excavations.
