Description
The ultimate visitor experience for the world rugby enthusiast. Much more than just a collection of wonderful artefacts, the Museum of Rugby is an inspirational journey through the history of world rugby. Innovative exhibits bring to life some of the great moments in the international game, assulting the senses with the sights, sounds and smells of rugby football. You'll get up close and personal with the Calcutta Cup, thrill to interactive footage of some of the greatest tries of all time and even test your own strength on the Museum's formidable scrum machine. The time has come to take your place in history with a visit to the Museum of rugby, Twickenham.
Collections description
This collection has been acquired over the years from international players, families, clubs and collectors, or has been bought by the Museum at auction.
Since the birth of the Rugby Football Union (RFU) in 1871 a wealth of rugby memorabilia has been accumulated. Dusty minute books and faded letters; early match programmes and tickets for memorable games: the fascinating array of gifts from other unions. In more recent times, with a more deliberate acquisition policy, our collection has developed to include historical and contemporary photographs, videos, artworks, equipment and other miscellaneous objects.
The main themes of collection:
•Famous players’ memorabilia/objects (from any nation)
•Supporter memorabilia/objects
•Early development of the game, artefacts of historical importance
•Artwork with a rugby theme, or relevance to rugby history
•Miscellaneous objects highlighting humour and the social aspects of the rugby lifestyle
•A library of rugby match programmes
•Archival items focusing specifically on the RFU, England and Twickenham Stadium
Key artists and exhibits
Imporant rugby art works by W.B.Wollen. Harry Langton collection of rugby artefacts. W.W.Wakefield collection of artefacts. Numerous rugby trophies including the Rugby World Cup (display 2004/2005).
