Description
South Shields Museum is one of the most successful local museums in the country. Its major collections are in social history and art which are represented in the newly refurbished galleries.

Collections description
South Shields Museum & Gallery explores local history during the life and times of famous author, Catherine Cookson in Tales of South Tyneside.

Changing Faces, opening on 25 October 2008, tells the story of Tyneside from the Bronze Age to the end of the nineteenth century, with artefacts from the Museum's archaeological, industrial and local history collections.

Creature Corner showcases a selection of snakes and spiders, allowing visitors to learn all about these amazing creatures, their natural environment and their diet.

The Museum also features Art Adventure - an art gallery with a difference, combining many of the museum's paintings with exciting hands-on displays which enable visitors to find out more about the paintings and their artists.

There is also a temporary exhibition programme.
