Description
Locomotion is the first national museum to be built in the North East. It combines the historic buildings and workshops of the Timothy Hackworth Museum with a 6,000 sq m building housing 60 vehicles from the National Collection, classrooms, conservation, workshops, cafe and shop on a one kilometre (1091 yards) long site which will also include public art, picnic facilities and play area. Shildon was selected by the NRM as a site to house the reserve collection of railway vehicles and establish a National Rail Collections Centre. This will ensure that historically important railway vehicles, which are not currently housed in adequate accommodation, are held in secure and weather proof premises and moreover are accessible to the public for the first time. The new building will also contain offices, technical and research facilities, a retail outlet and catering facilities. The incorporation of the existing Museum and its associated buildings will enhance the environmental setting and add to the historical character of Locomotion. Shildon is one of the World’s oldest railway towns. The new Museum will give recognition to the significance of Shildon in Railway History and of railways to the Shildon community. There will be a high level of community involvement in the Museum and its operation. The Museum will be a centre for community activity and events. Volunteering opportunities help to train local young people in conjunction with local businesses.
