GUILDHALL MUSEUM
Situated in the heart of the City, the Guildhall has been home to Carlisle’s historic Guilds for over 500 years, and is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the city. Displays feature Guild items, and special objects. (Open Good Friday to end of October).
Your day would not be complete without a visit to our delightful Garden Restaurant offering teas and speciality coffees, light snacks and lunches, whilst our gift shop is a popular stop with many unique gift ideas and specially commissioned jewellery.
Roman Carlisle began with the building of the first fort, which now underlies much of the area from Tullie House to Carlisle Castle. The presence of the army provided a ready market, stimulating the growth of the town, which eventually became the capital of the tribal area of the Carvetti.
