Description
The Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway carries public service trains using locomotives and rolling stock owned and operated by the Scottish Railway Preservation Society (founded 1961).
The railway is home to an enormous collection of railway equipment, some of which is displayed in the Scottish Railway Exhibition.
Trains leave Bo'ness Station at 11:00, 12:15, 13:45; 15:00 & 16:15. Visitors should allow 1 hour for the return trip, 2 hours if the opportunity is taken to explore the underground workings of the Fireclay Mine at Birkhill Station. The delights of the Exhibition and the shop and buffet (all at Bo'ness Station) require an other hour at least.
Collections description
The collection is representative of Scottish railways from 1870 to the present day. There are 25 steam locomotives, 23 diesel locomotives, one electric locomotive, one electric and one diesel multiple units, 67 carriages and over 100 wagons. These are looked after in storage buildings and workshops as well as in the public Exhibition.
The Exhibition in addition has fixed displays illustrating the unique story of the making and operation of Scotland's railways.
