Reputedly the largest industrial ice house in Scotland, Tugnet Ice House nestles between the River Spey and the Moray Firth at the mouth of the Spey. This spectacular building is open to the public free of charge, and you are welcome to walk through its six chambers and appreciate the spectacular vaulted brick ceiling. Once the focus of a thriving coastal salmon fishery, the building is now preserved as a reminder of this past prosperity. At the height of the salmon fishery, it was used to store river ice throughout the year, which was packed with the salmon to preserve them on their long journey to market. The Speyside Way long distance walk ends at Tugnet and a variety of wildlife can be seen here at any time. The nearby Moray Firth Wildlife Centre, which looks after visitor interests at the ice house day-to-day, offers shop and refreshment facilities, and exhibitions on local wildlife.
