Description
Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery (formerly known as Rowley's House Museum) is the headquarters of Shrewsbury Museums Service (see also Shrewsbury Castle and Coleham Pumping Station). The collections were founded in 1835 as the museum of the Shropshire and North Wales Natural History and Antiquarian Society. The museum is housed in a fine 16th/17th century building, part timber-framed former warehouse and part brick and stone mansion. The museum provides long-term displays relating to Shrewsbury, the county of Shropshire and its hinterland. Also an active programme of Special Exhitions and Events including Contemporary Art.
Collections description
The collections of Shrewsbury Museums Service comprise about 166,000 items including Geology, Natural History, Archaeology, Social History, Fine and Decorative Arts. These include collections of National and Regional Importance. Significant collections include excavated items from the Roman town of Viroconium at Wroxeter and large collections of Caughley and Coalport Porcelain.
