Description
Harewood, home of the Earl of Harewood (cousin of the Queen), was designed in 1759 by John Carr. The Lascelles family have opened their doors to the public since the early nineteenth century, and Harewood is now consistently the most visited historic property in Yorkshire. Although Harewood is a seasonal attraction pre booked groups are welcomed throughout the year for a more intimate insight on selected days.
The House, renowned for its stunning architecture and exquisite Adam interiors, contains a rich collection of Chippendale furniture, fine porcelain and outstanding art collections from Italian Renaissance masterpieces and Turner watercolours to contemporary works. Lord Harewood's mother, HRH Princess Mary, Princess Royal, lived at Harewood for 35 years and much of her Royal memorabilia is still displayed. The Old Kitchen contains "the best collection of noble household copperware in the country" giving visitors a glimpse into an essential area of yesteryear's below stairs life. In contrast the Terrace Gallery is a nationally recognised venue for many high profile contemporary artists.
The inspiring Grounds and Gardens include a restored parterre Terrace, oriental Rock Garden, Bhutanese Stupa, Walled Garden, lakeside and woodland walks, the Bird Garden and for youngsters, the thrills and excitement of the Adventure Playground!
Throughout the season Harewood hosts a number of special events including open-air concerts, theatre performances, craft fairs, car rallies and much more!
Harewood House is easily accessible and is just 20 minutes drive from Leeds City Centre or Harrogate and 45 minutes from York.
Collections description
The House, renowned for its stunning architecture and exquisite Adam interiors, contains a rich collection of Chippendale furniture, fine porcelain and outstanding art collections from Italian Renaissance masterpieces and Turner watercolours to contemporary works. Lord Harewood's mother, HRH Princess Mary, Princess Royal, lived at Harewood for 35 years and much of her Royal memorabilia is still displayed. For the first time ever in 2004, the Servants’ Hall, Housekeeper’s Room, and corridors of ‘Below Stairs’ Harewood, displaying over 1,000 objects with fascinating tales to tell, opened to the public. Through a mixture of hands-on discovery, historical reconstruction, and computer-aided learning, visitors will find out how the servants lived, what they wore and what they did. Visitors are encouraged to peek inside cupboards to make often weird and sometimes wonderful discoveries – from bedpans to boot-scrapers, servants’ livery to cabinetmaker’s bills. The Old Kitchen contains "the best collection of noble household copperware in the country" giving visitors a glimpse into an essential area of yesteryear's below stairs life. In contrast the Terrace Gallery is a nationally recognised venue for many high profile contemporary artists.
The exhibitions are changed regularly to reflect the divesity and quality of the collections at Harewood.
