NU - A SLICE OF YOUTH CULTURE AT GLASGOW'S GOMA
By David Prudames 13/01/2003

Nu - Inliners and Eyeliners, at Glasgow's Gallery of Modern Art until February 16, brought the goth, rock and skater kids, who make the outside of the gallery their weekend home, inside.

The work of a group called nuArts, the exhibition is a collection of colour portraiture and video work produced by and with the young individuals who gather in the area around the building each weekend.

Coming together in large groups, the youths are often seen as intimidating by gallery staff and visitors, but Nu seeks to counter this by giving them a sense of ownership of the institution and an appreciation of what goes on there.

A snapshot of youth culture, the project faithfully gives a voice to these young people and records their use of music, fashion and lifestyle as a means of alternative self-expression.

nuArts is the brainchild of Jim Poyner, a photographer and community activist, and Graham MacIver, a video film-maker. The pair spent several months speaking to and compiling footage of the groups and eventually set up a video unit for an afternoon last summer on the top floor of the Gallery of Modern Art.

The groups of young people were invited in to say anything about their lives and how the wider Glasgow public perceive them, while city council Youth Services staff listened to their concerns on what is available to them in the city centre.

Nu is the end product and offers a fresh and vivid view of the mix of goth, rock, punk, hip hop and skate fans who may look different from one another, but are united in their desire to be seen as outside the mainstream.

A series of brightly coloured photographic stills and video images testify to the creativity of these individuals and allow a rare chance to discover the views of a little heard from section of the community.
