Staff at Roots of Norfolk at Gressenhall Rural Life Museum say it's ‘business as usual’ at the museum despite a fire that damaged two sheds and destroyed a number of artefacts at around 1.30am on Monday May 30 2005.

Local fire fighters were quickly on the scene and were able to put out the flames within 20 minutes.

The buildings were in the Union Farm area of the museum and were mainly used for storing material for school activities. Museum spokesperson Helen Mitchell said that most of the items would be reinstated although “a small number of items will be difficult to replace.”

A Victorian baby’s dress and a nightgown are believed to be among the unique items lost in the blaze, which also damaged some electrical equipment and a range of specially hand made tools.

The fire, which is currently being investigated by police as a possible arson attack, happened on the morning of one of the busiest days of the year for the museum.

Staff worked hard to ensure the Norfolk History Fair went ahead as planned and, with the affected area cordoned off and despite one of the wettest bank holiday Mondays for many years, the museum welcomed over 1,300 visitors.

“All is well,” said Ms Mitchell, “and most importantly no animals were hurt in the fire.”
