An exhibition of photographs by a leading black filmmaker is to go on display at Norwich Gallery.

Pressure, an exhibition of photographs by Horace Ové, opens on November 2 2005 and runs until December 3.

Ové is primarily known for his filmmaking. His internationally acclaimed feature, Pressure, was the first black feature-length film to be made in the UK.

But alongside his film career, Ové has worked all over the world as a photographer, capturing the social and political events of the late 20th century.

Born in Trinidad, Ové recorded images of his homeland and later the UK, charting the beginning of the Notting Hill Carnival and its development throughout the decades.

He said: “What I try to capture is the reality of a moment in a person’s life that attracts my eye and mind, as well as their thoughts and inner feelings which are reflected in their face and body language and not just a pose for the camera.”

The exhibition also features three screenings of Ové's films. Image courtesy: Horace Ové.

This latest exhibition runs alongside film screenings of three of Ové’s films – Baldwins Nigger (1968), Reggae (1971) and Pressure (1976). Ové will also give a talk at NSAD Duke Street Lecture Theatre on November 2.

During his career Horace Ové has exhibited at prominent venues all over the country – at the Photographers’ Gallery, the Barbican and the Cornerhouse in Manchester. Twelve of his portraits were also bought by the National Portrait Gallery where they were exhibited in 2004.
