Melton Carnegie Museum in Leicestershire is celebrating after receiving official accreditation from the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA).

The museum, which reopened in 2002 following major refurbishment, traces the social and economic history of Melton and includes exhibitions on the town’s world-renowned Stilton cheese and pork pie industries and accounts of the arguments for and against fox hunting.

By winning the award, Melton Carnegie Museum has proved it meets the MLA’s universal national standards of visitor services and information, maintenance and care of museum collections and how they are governed.

Mark Wood, chair of the MLA, congratulated the museum, saying: “Being awarded an accreditation is an impressive achievement. It recognises the high standard and service that Melton Carnegie Museum provides and acknowledges the hard work of the staff.”

Neighbouring museums Snibston Discovery Park, Donington le Heath Manor House, Charnwood Museum and Harborough Museum have also received the prestigious MLA award. Together with Melton Carnegie Museum, they are the first museums in the East Midlands region to be accredited.

“This is a really excellent achievement and something to celebrate,” said Ernie White, Leicestershire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Services. “Leicestershire’s museums are meeting national standards and continuing to produce new, quality displays which engage visitors.”
