The biggest annual arts prize in the UK got underway on February 2 2007 when the £100,000 Gulbenkian Prize for Museums longlist was revealed. 24 Hour Museum is an enthusiastic supporter of the award and we wanted to know what you, the public think should be Museum of the Year.
So as the judges get on with visiting the ten museums on the longlist, we launched our own people’s vote, also on Febraury 2.
“When we announced the longlist a few days ago we began our peoples poll and we are amazed how many votes have already been cast – clearly people are really getting behind the vote,” said 24 Hour Museum Editor Jon Pratty.
At the time of writing, three museums have already pulled ahead in the poll, with The Warner Textile Archive at Braintree Museum, Weston Park Museum in Sheffield and the De La Warr Pavillion, Bexhill hogging the majority of votes with 72, 65 and 64 respectively.
Not far behind is a chasing pack that includes the Women’s Library (44 and rising), Pallant House (22) and the Horniman Museum and Kew Palace with a respectable 20 apiece.

Votes are however coming through for all the other longlisted museums as we speak, and of course, it’s early days - anything might happen in a ten horse race.
“We’d like to know what real people all over the country think of these places - real people, real museum visitors,” added Jon. “It’s not all about national museums in the big cities, in my mind, it's all about what my local museum could do with £100,000 and what really touched me this year on my museum travels.”
Over the next two weeks we will be profiling all of the long-listed museums (in strict alphabetical order!) so there will be plenty of time to root for your museum of choice.
Voting will stay open until the prize winner is announced and we’ll also make sure the Gulbenkian judges get to hear who the public is voting for before they announce the shortlist of four. We’ll announce our People’s Favourite on May 23 2007 - the day before the announcement of the Prize. So get voting… |
