Museums and Galleries Month 2007 is well underway, and there’s plenty going on at venues up and down the country. We’ve been trawling through the 24 Hour Museum what’s on section for highlights, picking seven events for the next seven days from the 850-odd events already listed

Leighton Buzzard Railway has bagged a real railway-lovers’ coup, bringing together four Indian steam locomotives on display at the same time.

The railway’s three resident Indian locos, which all used to work on the narrow-gauge railways of India, will be joined by No 19 from the legendary Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. Takes place on May 7.

Jasper Maskelyn was a master illusionist who, after a successful theatrical career, was pressed into service by the British military during World War Two to create deceptions and camouflage on a grand scale, a kind of ‘abracadabra - where’s that tank’ arrangement.

The Imperial War Museum is bringing ‘The Magician’, Granville Markland to the Museum on May 8 at 11.00 am to explore Maskelyn’s work and to demonstrate some of his secret techniques. Visitors will even be able to have a go themselves at some of his techniques.

Ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at an art gallery? A special tour at Manchester Art Gallery on May 9 will take you to the nooks and crannies that the public never sees – from the plant room to the loading bay, where you can see just how much work and organisation goes into bringing those works of art on show.

If an inspiring walk in the park on a spring day has ever brought out the poetic side in you, then a guided walk at Priory Park in Warwick is bound to appeal. Steven Falk, senior keeper at St John’s House Museum, will be joined by poet Jane Commane on May 10 to wax lyrical about the flora and fauna in the park at this time of year.

Those who fancy rhyming ‘flower’ with ‘shower’ or the like can also create their own verses with the help of the expert guides. Two events run at 10.30 and 12.30.

Terry Deary is well known for his Horrible History books, where he ups the yuk factor to reel in the kids to the world of the past. The Artist, the Author and the Ancient Greeks is an exhibition running at Sir Henry Jones Museum in Conwy on May 14, featuring original illustrations by Helen Flook from Deary’s new series of history books for children.

Night at the Museums will be hitting venues all over the country on May 19 but Bath has decided it just can’t wait to show off its museums and galleries in the evening. On May 12 a trail around nine venues in the city will start at Victoria Art Gallery with live jazz and portrait workshops and then end at the Roman Baths, which will be torchlit and resplendent, with a licensed bar and more live music.

Henley-on-Thames’ ancient Barn Galleries, surrounded by their stunning gardens, are the worthy setting for Artspace, their annual show that this year brings together 80 professional artists to the venue on May 13.

The barns and grounds will be packed full of contemporary sculpture, paintings, ceramics, jewellery, glass, metal and wood. Great to look at, and if you’ve a few quid to spare you could take one home for the mantelpiece too.
